1st Reading: Book of Genesis 9,8-15.
God said to Noah and to his sons with him: “See, I am now establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you and with every living creature that was with you: all the birds, and the various tame and wild animals that were with you and came out of the ark. I will establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all bodily creatures be destroyed by the waters of a flood; there shall not be another flood to devastate the earth.” God added: “This is the sign that I am giving for all ages to come, of the covenant between me and you and every living creature with you: I set my bow in the clouds to serve as a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth, and the bow appears in the clouds, I will recall the covenant I have made between me and you and all living beings, so that the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all mortal beings.
Psalms 25(24),4-5.6-7.8-9.
Make known to me your ways, LORD; teach me your paths.
Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my savior.
For you I wait all the long day, because of your goodness, LORD.
Remember your compassion and love, O LORD; for they are ages old.
Remember no more the sins of my youth; remember me only in light of your love.
Good and upright is the LORD, who shows sinners the way, Guides the humble rightly,
and teaches the humble the way.
2nd Reading: First Letter of Peter 3,18-22.
For Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the sake of the unrighteous, that he might lead you to God. Put to death in the flesh, he was brought to life in the spirit. In it he also went to preach to the spirits in prison, who had once been disobedient while God patiently waited in the days of Noah during the building of the ark, in which a few persons, eight in all, were saved through water. This prefigured baptism, which saves you now. It is not a removal of dirt from the body but an appeal to God for a clear conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers subject to him.
Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Mark 1,12-15.
At once the Spirit drove him out into the desert, and he remained in the desert for forty days, tempted by Satan. He was among wild beasts, and the angels ministered to him. After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God: This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.
Meditation Points:
Jesus fasts “40 days” in the Desert. There were both Wild beasts and Angels nearby.
The Gospel of Mark presents today some signs and symbols for us. So we start the first sunday of Lent.
40 days are known to us. In Bibilcal language it shows he fullness. But the question is “fullness of what?”
Nothing other than the life of Jesus, at first. Jesus didn’t merely fast the 40 days of his desert life.
No, he did fast for his life time. From the beginning to the end; from his birth to ascention in t heaven.
What is then Fasting? Is it merly avoiding food or wordly “pleasure objects or subjects” with out meaning?
Without Inner happiness? With out inner Peace?
NO, Prophet Joel (2,12-18) and Isaiah (58,1-9.) were not just simply old fashioned prophets. They knew the meaning of the fasting.
Fasting is getting near to God and Man. Understanding My God and my dear and near. Spending time for them.
Caring them. Accepting them. I don’t think God the Father will not sanction our heavenly boarding pass,
only because we are “good” in spiritual side. St. James exhorts us too the same. Work and faith should go together.
Fasten is getting the smooth track to God and Human.
And when it is found, then we are asked to do as it is wanted.
Not only this “40 days” – from Ash Wednesday to Good-Friday. No, it should guide us further.
In that way we can prove we were “fasting”.
Desert, is there where, we feel no life, no love, no care. Yes, we are some time in a world of desert.
We feel no love and care in this world, although we are among so many friends.
How can I make my “desert” in to a garden of colors?
Jesus was surrounded by both Wild beasts and angels. We too are assisted with the same, in a changed
and modern manner. We have enough beasts beside us.
Just think take a breath and close your eyes and think of the reasons, through which I can easily forget God and Men.
…
There are plentyof….
Also we have Angels with us. Smoothing, comforting, and caring and advising.
Take time to find them…
Fasten is also the time to find out these Beasts and angels…
a time to sort out them…
a time to follow our Angel…
Let’s start searching it…
