4th Sunday in Ordinary time Year B – Sermon Help

1st Reading: Book of Deuteronomy 18,15-20.
“A prophet like me will the LORD, your God, raise up for you from among your own kinsmen; to him you shall listen.
This is exactly what you requested of the LORD, your God, at Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, ‘Let us not again hear the voice of the LORD, our God, nor see this great fire any more, lest we die.’
And the LORD said to me, ‘This was well said.
I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their kinsmen, and will put my words into his mouth; he shall tell them all that I command him.
If any man will not listen to my words which he speaks in my name, I myself will make him answer for it.
But if a prophet presumes to speak in my name an oracle that I have not commanded him to speak, or speaks in the name of other gods, he shall die.’

Psalms 95(94),1-2.6-7.7-9.
Come, let us sing joyfully to the LORD; cry out to the rock of our salvation.
Let us greet him with a song of praise, joyfully sing out our psalms.
Enter, let us bow down in worship; let us kneel before the LORD who made us.
For this is our God, whose people we are, God’s well-tended flock. Oh, that today you would hear his voice:
For this is our God, whose people we are, God’s well-tended flock. Oh, that today you would hear his voice:
Do not harden your hearts as at Meribah, as on the day of Massah in the desert.
There your ancestors tested me; they tried me though they had seen my works.

2nd Reading: First Letter to the Corinthians 7,32-35.
I should like you to be free of anxieties. An unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord.
But a married man is anxious about the things of the world, how he may please his wife,
and he is divided. An unmarried woman or a virgin is anxious about the things of the Lord, so that she may be holy in both body and spirit. A married woman, on the other hand, is anxious about the things of the world, how she may please her husband.
I am telling you this for your own benefit, not to impose a restraint upon you, but for the sake of propriety and adherence to the Lord without distraction.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Mark 1,21-28.
Then they came to Capernaum, and on the sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught.
The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes.
In their synagogue was a man with an unclean spirit;
he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are–the Holy One of God!”
Jesus rebuked him and said, “Quiet! Come out of him!”
The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him.
All were amazed and asked one another, “What is this? A new teaching with authority. He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him.”
His fame spread everywhere throughout the whole region of Galilee.

Sermon Tips:
- Many progressive people , especially the youth think that the church is not actual. It is sometimes very boring to be there. It is not a wrong comment about the church. But I will say it is not the reality. Yes there are some “old” “orthodox” styles in the church. But those wo want to enjoy the presence of God and other faithful, they can still enjoy that in the church. The real “need” is needed. That is the point.
Today we see Jesus heals a man possesed by an evil spirit. We know that, yes, even the evil spirit recognizes the Divinity in Jesus. The people are touched by the way of Jesus teachings. They wonder about him. Yes, we know people saying, oh father today’s mass was so good… Todays sermon was so good… How many are, but really touched? Just as the people there, many are still not touched by God.
Only the possessed man get’s the real healing.
- The priests, Saducees, and Pharisees,…they were unhappy,
because of Jesus new way.
because of his new teaching,
Because he lived what he taught.
That was annoying to the other, as there were no connection between  the life and teaching in their life.
- Really a pathetic situation of the Highclass – The one who is entrusted to guide and lead the people,
is now suffering  under “disorientation” –
Jesus  does this wonder in Capernaum. This city is so connected to Jesus life. After leaving Nazareth,  this is his “own city” (Mt 9,1). He does so many “big wonders” there, like:
  • Dead daughter of Jairus raised (Mark 5:22; Luke 8:41)
  • Drove evil spirit from a man in the synagogue (Mark 1:21-28)
  • Paralyzed man let down through the roof and healed (Mark 2:1-12)
  • Jesus caused four of disciples to catch fish in a miraculous way (Luke 5:1-11)
  • Through a fish, Jesus supplied tribute tax money needed by Peter (Matthew 17:24-27)
  • Healing of the centurion’s servant afflicted with palsy (Matt. 8:5-13)
  • Healing of the son of a nobleman in the King’s court (Herod Antipas) (John 4:46-54)
  • Healing many other people and casting out demons, as “all the city was gathered together at the door” (Mark 1:29-34)
Still capernaum remains unmoved, unrepentant. Jesus curses this city .
How much wonders we get from God. Are we really aware of them?
Are we grateful to God?
Or are we like “capernaum”?
Are we like the High class Jews in the Gospel?
